On Friday, November 4, Oak Park & River Forest High School recognized two distinguished alumni with the annual Tradition of Excellence Award. Established by the Class of 1982, the award is presented annually to alumni or former students who have distinguished themselves professionally and who, through these accomplishments, have brought great credit to their alma mater. These distinguished alumni are honored at a brunch following the awards presentation during back-to-back all-school assemblies.
The alumni honored with the award in 2011 are IRIS KRASNOW '72 and PHIL RADFORD '94. Iris is a journalist and author; she has written numerous books, appeared in diverse publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, the Washington Post and Parade Magazine, and is a frequent guest on radio and television.
Phil Radford is the Executive Director of Greenpeace. In that post, he is at the helm of one of the largest and most influential environmental organizations in the country. Radford leads a national team of 500 highly-skilled environmental leaders working in 23 cities across the U.S. on national and global campaigns to protect our planet’s oceans, forests, and climate. More about these distinguished alumni can be found at this LINK.
Class Reunion groups make generous donations
The 2011 Reunion season recently concluded and we are very appreciative of the donations we received from the Class of 1951, the Class of 1961 and the Class of 1986. The members of the CLASS of '51 were especially generous. In addition to a sizeable donation, they sent a copy of their booklet "A Brief History of Oak Park and River Forest High School" which included a number of interesting comparisons of "then" and "now" - not the least of which was the change in the name of the school in 1950 from OAK PARK TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOl to its current name.
In addition to the Class of '51, the CLASS OF 1986 held their 25th anniversary reunion and took up a special collection to make a donation to us. Members of the Reunion committee included Hali Golz Cooper, Andrea Petlock-Novak, Speleos Dravillas, Joellyn Tulipano-Huebner, Julia Daniel Deem, Michael Junius and Melissa S. Unglaub. We thank them for their all they did to plan and organize their reunion and for encouraging their classmates to support us.
We are so grateful to the Classes of '51, '61 and '86 for their recent donations, which support all of our programs, including our Summer Enrichment grants. This past summer, 21 students were awarded a total of over $13,000 to participate in a variety of educational summer programs in the arts and sciences.
With your support we can do even more next year!
Donations also provide operating funds so we can continue to provide reunion support and other alumni networking opportunites.
Thank you Classic Cinemas LAKE Theatre
We are very grateful for the support we receive from our many donors, including members of the local business and educational community. Because our budget is funded entirely by donations, we would not be able to function without this vital support.
The Summer 2011 edition of our 8-page AlumNews newsletter was sponsored by the LAKE THEATRE in honor of their 75th anniversary. The Lake Theatre, opened in 1936, remains an art-deco masterpiece in the heart of downtown Oak Park that offers state-of-the-art sound and picutre technology.
Our Spring 2011 issue of the ALUMNEWS newsletter was sponsored by a donation from RESURRECTION UNIVERSITY or as it might be better know by some of our older alumni, the West Suburban College of Nursing which was founded in 1914. Since that time, it has provided a quality eduation preparing students for careers in nursing and related healthcare services. For more information about Resurrection University, visit call (708) 763-6530 or visit their website at www.resu.edu.
We are so grateful to RESURRECTION UNIVERSITY for their donation to underwrite the printing and mailing costs for our 8 page newsletter. This sponsorship allows us to devote our resources to support our other programs, including our Summer Enrichment grants. This summer, 24 students were awarded a total of over $14,000 to participate in a variety of educational summer programs in the arts and sciences.
Our newsletter is mailed to our member/donors three times per year. Don't miss an issue - make your donation TODAY! We'd be happy to send you a complimentary newsletter if you'll provide your mailing address.
Donations also provide operating funds so we can continue to provide reunion support and other alumni networking opportunites.
